Wavelength Narratives at the Vendée Globe!
WAVELENGTH BLOG: I’m heading to the start of the Vendée Globe this week. The world’s most recognised and challenging race around the globe will start from Les Sables d’Olonne, weather permitting, on 10th November. One man or woman, one boat, the 18m IMOCA, 40 entries, no stops, no assistance. Tens of thousands of visitors on the dockside and on the water to cheer them on their way.
The Vendée Globe aims to use the media impact of the event to raise public awareness of ocean conservation as the competing sailors highlight the fragility of our oceans. The event organisers and their partners are also highly aware of the impact of the visitors coming to the start venue and are laying on low-cost public transport and encouraging people to come by bike. 650 cycle parking facilities will be available in the immediate proximity of the Village entrance.
I won’t cycle the whole way from the UK at this time of year (brr!) but my companions and I will leave our car at our accommodation 12 miles away and looking forward to a gravel track bike ride through the scenic forest and coastal areas to Les Sables.
In the meantime I wish every competitor the best of luck – OK, especially the British ones. Go Pip and the Sams!!
